Want to Lose 20 Pounds? Eat Raw Foods

January 31st 2007 16:35
I just found a couple interesting studies online about the benefits of avoiding processed foods (and animal products). Apparently people weighed, on average, 35 lbs less than those eating a typical Western diet. In another study, participants lost an average of 20-25 lbs eating this diet.
The interesting thing is they still ate about 2000 calories a day. This corresponds to another study I read about the benefits of a vegetarian/vegan diet (this would be vegan).
But really, do I have to give up my cheese and eggs to see the benefits of not eating processed foods? I couldn't find a study supporting clean eating by itself as a way to drop weight and fat, but believe me, it works. I found plenty of articles talking about it (although some kind of preachy).

The only thing I haven't been able to give up (besides chocolate occasionally) is my chemical-laden Diet Pepsi. I'm sorry, but there is just no "healthy substitute" for this refreshing drink. Sure, water is healthier for you...but dammit, it doesn't taste as good!
Anyway, I mentioned the study to Matt, but he would rather die than give up animal products, most of all meat...he is a "steak and potatoes" kind of guy. We would both love to drop 20 pounds, believe me. Maybe someday I will be able to wean myself off of the cheese and eggs, and just drink soy milk.
If you think you can eat vegan, give it a try. You have nothing to lose...except 20 lbs!

Wouldn't Atkins with its emphasis upon protein limit calorie intake simple because the calorie density of meat etc is such that it is really hard to eat enough of it to reach 2000 calories a day? Not to mention that protein is glucogonic.

I'm sure it would. What I found strange about this diet is it's actually LOW protein which doesn't really make sense!

these days, I see a lot of articles talking about how corn syrup is used in most processed foods in America, and that is a huge contributor to obesity and diabetes...

Cibbuano -
That's totally true, which is why eliminating these foods can make a big difference, especially if you've been eating them for years. HFCS is a big problem!
I wonder about the low protein content though, since protein is supposed to make your metaboilsm work faster after you eat it. I still prefer animal sources of protein.

We eat a lot of raw veggies with our meals because it's just simpler to prepare for the week. But we haven't cut out the meat - eat lots of fish and chicken, occasional red meat. I think balance is important versus any one fad diet or program. As we work out four times a week with weights, we absolutely need to get extra protein, so do that through whey protein drinks. I stay away from processed, refined food as much as possible - and have found that I feel a LOT better for it and have TONS more energy. Doesn't mean we don't ocassionaly go out with the gang for lunch, but 95% of the time we eat clean.
