I recently joined in on the madness of ANTM in the beginning of Season 7. You always hear how the models are so skinny, the standards are so high, etc. I am continually amazed out how skinny these models are.
The first audition process, after a few days of "model boot camp," was the same with the models getting interviewed by Tyra, Nigel and Miss Jay. One after another walked in with tiny, tiny bodies and huge heads!
The part where each girl changes into a bikini, then models it, was a little depressing. They have the smallest little arms and legs, and perfectly flat stomach. One of the girls had even just been pregnant - and practically had a concave stomach!
I'm bringing this up because I think a lot of young girls might watch this show and want to look like these model-wannabes. I don't know that these girls really comprehend the suffering and hardship that occurs when you starve yourself down to this size. Yeah, I was once this size - but I was miserable! I definitely wasn't prancing around in a bikini.
I'm glad they're featuring two plus-size models in this season. However I don't think the other girls understand that these two are their competition. They could do really well and are both gorgeous. But the others seem to think "Oh, yeah, don't have to worry about those two..." just because they're not stick-skinny!
I would love it if a plus size model made it into high fashion (which could happen if one of them won!). Tyra is larger herself and shouldn't hold up these impossible standards for all her models. Surely she remembers her own days as a model and how hard she probably had to work with not much to eat.
