Another Reason To Hate HFCS

January 27th 2009 23:32
If you have read my opinion on High Fructose Corn Syrup, you know that I am not a big fan. I believe that it does contribute to obesity and other health problems that plague people in the US today. At one time it was found only in beverages, but now it is found in most foods, too. It is tough to totally avoid HFCS today, so I tend to minimize my intake by always reading the ingredients. It is so common, that many advocates against it have recommended food that contains it.

Now comes another study that finds HFCS contains mercury. I'm not seeing the grocery stores removing all things that contain HFCS.

From the article:
"Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply," said the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy's Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies.

It should be everyone's goal to consume as little, if any, HFCS as possible. I'm sure we will be hearing more about it and how it is bad for our health in the future.

Good question and I probably have to research it. Could be the way corn is refined or what is used to refine it, or maybe something else all together.

Although mercury is dangerous, some levels can be tolerated in the human system. Fish for the most contain mercury and we are asked not to consume everyday like some do.

Again, I'll do my research because it sounds like an entry!

A bit of help from the article:
However, the IATP told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that four plants in Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio and West Virginia still use "mercury-cell" technology that can lead to contamination.
