Are Models Too Skinny?
February 3rd 2007 16:37
Well, it's Fashion Week! I'm sure many of you read the news awhile back about extremely underweight models being banned from runways in Madrid, Milan and Brazil. Specifically no one who had a BMI under 18, which is borderline underweight (normal is 18.5 to 25). There have also been several deaths of models who were reportedly anorexic, which is sad.
What is "too skinny"? People complain all the time that young impressionable girls will see the rail thin models in the media and turn to eating disorders. I personally think eating disorders have to do with a lot deeper stuff than seeing a skinny model or two. After all, they've been around for hundreds of years. Of course, they've been on the rise, so maybe it does have something to do with it.
I used to think this body type was beautiful, especially the women in Vogue. Now I prefer healthy, muscular bodies. It wouldn't hurt for some of these models to put some muscle on and stop starving themselves.
I'm all for the BMI restrictions, given the recent deaths. Models don't need to have pressure on them to get to unhealthy weights, so maybe this will help. Besides, a BMI of 18 is still plenty skinny.
Our culture does place a lot of value on being thin, however. We support it by buying all the diet pills, diet books and fat-free, low-calorie food. If this sort of rule was to pass in the US, would we really be happy?
Post and tell me what you think.

Education is the answer, prevention being better than cure.
I'm not much into models....yawn....and I do think their images do affect the young and impressionable in their vital years of development.
It really is a troubled world in which we live, we haven't learnt to adjust to modern living and are doing some silly things.
Keep up the good work,
