Bad Habits Deleted
September 6th 2008 23:27
If you are trying to quit bad habits(alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, etc.), what works for some may not work for others. We are individuals and what works for one may not work for anyone else. I feel that any bit of advice that helps conquer addiction in some way is good.
I feel that what comes into play in conquering addictions depends on our motivation, the time of useage, the amount of useage, and more importantly: our DESIRE to quit!
To add some humor to this post, we will need a guinea pig. Enter Amy Winehouse...or Lohan, Spears, and any number of extreme celebrities. Amy sang a song about not going to rehab, and she did. She looks like Peg Bundy on crack! She probably used drugs for a long time, a lot of hard core drugs, and she doesn't seem to be planning to quit anytime soon!
That is the bottom line: You have to WANT to quit. I know someone who tried everything everything to quit smoking. Pills, patch, accupuncture, hypnosis, cold turkey, etc., were all tried but he still smokes today. Over 2 packs a day!
I took the Cold Turkey route and it worked for me. I had quit cold turkey a number of times before for many years. I always went back over something stupid. I would feel in a jovial mood, and ask for a cigarette. That '1' would re-ignite my cigarette addiction.
Before I quit smoking over 10 years ago, I was up to about 3 packs a day. I wanted to quit because my health was suffering and I had a really bad taste in my mouth. Pills and patches cost more than three cartons of cigarette so they were no good to me.
When I was diagnosed with bladder cancer and told that if I didn't quit, I would die, I went Cold Turkey. It's been over 10 years and cancer-free. I also look at the money factor. Cigarettes are an average of $5 a pack. If I lived and smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day, today that would be $15 a day. Times 365 days a year and that's $5475 a year!
An added bonus is that you are in better health by quitting. If ANYTHING works for you then by all means use it. I stand by my statement that ANY success depends on one's desire to quit! You have to WANT to quit.
I have spoken about Chantix before and given my opinion. I stick by my opinion that Chantix is not a good option. But if it works...use it. I know 5 people at work who used Chantix and they all quit using Chantix but keep smoking. They all say it was the dreams and nightmares that were too vivid and scary!
My thing today is alcohol. I can go weeks without a drop, but sometimes binge to no extreme. I'll drink nothing then down a six pack a day for a period of time. I'm what I consider an Extremist. So should I rely on Pills to cure my addiction?
New research shows ways of breaking bad habits. Bad habits are connected to other habits. Too much TV viewing may add to too much eating.
Here's more advice on how to quit smoking.
Now for my advice that may go against the norm.
1. Don't set a date and if you do, keep it to yourself.
If you tell everyone that you plan to quit on a certain date and fail, the ridicule will destroy your goal.
2. Cold Turkey works even if you continually fail.
Think of something you really hold dear. Children, health, money, etc., and see what you lose in that respect by smoking. Health benefits, money savings, time with children. Get it?
3. You have to want to quit.
If you really don't want to quit, you might as well just keep smoking because the quitting methods are costing more money!
Article: If a smoker is highly motivated to quit, and knows about the challenges ahead and is prepared to deal with them, success rates are much higher than normal. Even then it often takes numerous serious attempts at quitting over several years.
4. If at first you don't succeed...
I disagree with the article because nobody knows the challenges that may be ahead, so you can't prepare for them. I agree that you should prepare to keep trying because attempts will fail.
5. You have to WANT to quit!
Bottom Line!
