Carbs: Part Of A Balanced Nutrition
April 8th 2007 15:08
Over the years there have been movements and diets to wean people off of carbohydrates. Low and No Carb diets have become a fad that many find may have hidden consequences to their overall health. The multi-billion dollar low carb industry seems to still retain an active following, even with obvious unmentionable consequences that have occurred.
I will repeat what I have always said-Humans are omnivorous and reqire a variety of foods to maintain health and function. Carbohydrates are an essential necessity whether we agree or not. Fruits often fall into the carb label, and fruits should never be avoided.
Let me give you a quick way to determine if carbs are healthy or less healthy. If the Fiber is higher than the Sugars, that is a healthy carb. If the sugars are natural, rather than added, that is a healthy carb. If the sugars are higher than the fiber and are added, that's a carb to avoid or cut down on. The ingredients will help in either giving a sweetener such as sugar or HFCS.
Other good carbs are being developed such as in the world of the beloved pasta. Whole grain pasta is better for you and better tasting than ever before. There are a variety out there, not just those mentioned in the article.
Watch some WHOLE grain products that may be considered healthy, but are adding HFCS and soy. True you won't avoid every bad thing trying to eat healthy, but cutting down until alternatives are found may be an idea.
Again-EVERYTHING in moderation!
