Why Everyday Foods Could Be Making You Fat

January 25th 2007 16:35
As I mentioned in my introduction, I've been eating clean - no processed foods - for awhile now, and dropped fat without reducing my intake. What you may not know is that those everyday processed foods - even diet ones - can cause you to gain fat faster. Why? It's something called "chemical calories."
As mentioned in this ground-breaking diet book, The Body Restoration Plan: Eliminate Chemical Calories and Repair Your Body's Natural Slimming System, by Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton (available on Amazon) chemicals are everywhere - in the foods we eat, the makeup we use, even everyday household cleaning products. These chemicals may, over time, disable our appetite mechanism, even cause us to retain fat faster. The trick is to undergo a "detox"- including all natural products for beauty and home.

Bodybuilders have used the clean-eating system, eliminating chemical-laden foods, to drop fat fast for competitions. Tom Venuto, author of the e-Book "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" mentions the importance of avoiding chemical calories in foods. One school of thought is that your body simply wasn't made to process chemicals - so it stores them as fat. How else can you explain a complete body-composition shift when you stop taking in these foods?
It may seem insurmountable. Many people buy ready-made meals or snacks just for convenience, and these foods are everywhere. Some tips:
-Shop on the "perimeter" of your grocery store - i.e. vegetables, fruits, meat, grains, dairy, etc.
-Always, always remember to read the label. Some prepackaged foods contain ingredients like high fructose corn syrup or partially-hydrogenated oils (the infamous "trans" fats).
-Ask yourself, did it come from a farm or a factory? If it came from a farm, it's closer to its natural state.

-Cook several meals to have on hand in the refrigerator when you're on the go, so you can just grab something.

Feed your body right, and it will become lean, you'll have more energy, and you'll feel more satisfied. Trust me - you'll be glad you did it.

Shopping for unaltered foods is a full time job, I would think. The irony of bodybuilders is that they are so pure in some things and then turn around and inject something produced for horses. Please see Nomythfitness tomorrow. I want to hear you out on low carb diets.

Yeah, it's pretty hard...I've found HFCS or trans fats in the strangest things. I am not always perfect (I ate some cookies last week) but shopping at health food stores helps. But only if you read the ingredients!
I'll check out your site tomorrow, thanks for posting!
