Coffee and Dementia
February 4th 2009 00:27
Coffee is perhaps the most controversial product that humans consume. You hear that it's bad for you, then you hear that it's good for you. I hear that it's addicting then I hear that it may help you in some way. Is coffee good for you or bad for you? I say that it depends on how much is consumed and that all is good in moderation.
I think over 5 cups a day may be a bad thing. I also think that it should be drunk when you wake up to be beneficial. I average 3 cups a day and occasionally I skip a day or two. Now comes some good news, especially for me. Coffee may lower the risk of dementia!
From the article:
There are a few potential reasons why coffee could help stave off dementia, researchers point out. One reason is related to the fact that coffee drinkers may have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, and diabetes, in turn, is linked to a higher risk of dementia.
My side note:
I should point out that from this paragraph I get a sense that sugar or sweetener s are not included in the study.
Article:
Coffee also contains plant chemicals, such as chlorogenic acid, that act as antioxidants and may help protect body cells from damage over time. For its part, caffeine may have a protective effect on brain cells because it blocks receptors for a chemical called adenosine, which has depressant effects in the central nervous system.
More research is needed to determine whether coffee is truly protective, but for now, Eskelinen said, "those people who have been drinking coffee can still do so in good conscience."
So basically the study is still open to research to find coffee's link to lowering the risk to dementia. Still one must remember that too much coffee can cause heart palpitations and those prone to this should keep it to one or two cups a day. Although it hasn't been proven green tea may be a healthier alternative.

Michelle, enjoy the coffee but watch the sweetener!
Cheryl J same as above! ;_
Carolyn, it didn't save my father either but anything that helps is worth a try.
Nice hearing from you, Lester.
I also should have pointed out that I once read that filtered coffee is better than non-filtered coffee and I love instant. Future blog???

It's always espresso is the way to go and instant is what the poor people and our mum and grannies drink.
I have a cup of instant most mornings and another couple during the day. Anything else, for me, is what I have on the weekend (drip filter), or I might have cappacino if I go out.
