Coke May Switch Its Sweetener

March 16th 2007 16:52
As we all know, Coke has been making its regular soft drinks with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) since the 1980s due to how cheap and sweet it is. Apparently now due to more gasoline needed, corn prices are rising (ethanol, made from corn, is used for gasoline). Coke is feeling the hit in their profits and plan to reduce the sweetener to 1 part per 7 parts water instead of one per 5.5 parts.
Needing ways to save money, there's been some speculation that they may switch sweeteners completely - I doubt it will be to cane sugar, but perhaps Splenda.
Will this bother people? Who knows? We do know that HFCS causes blood sugar to spike without filling you up (i.e.. no matter how much you consume, you won't get full). It can actually make you hungrier and cause cravings for sweets. Now that I am staying away from sugar at all costs, if I have ANYTHING with the SLIGHTEST bit of HFCS by mistake I am feeling the cravings and the hunger! This is bad stuff!

About possibly switching to Splenda. What's so strange about the idea of an artificial sweetener in the majority of beverages? At least they won't be contributing to America's obesity crisis (which Coca Cola has been implicated in). Those who complain they want something natural - what's "natural" about HFCS?
We know they won't use cane sugar, because that would be much more expensive and is not nearly as sweet as artificial sweeteners are (therefore more would have to be used, upping the expense).
I'd like to see it happen. It might not happen anytime soon, but we're long overdue for less sugar in our diets. Sugar has absolutely no beneficial value - in fact I challenge you to find even one - and HFCS is worse.

What do you think? Would you buy Coke sweetened with Splenda? Let me know in the comments!

What is your source for the info that Coke is considering changing its formula? I haven't been able to find this info anywhere else.

If true, however, I would think they'd switch to their own new sweetener, called Rebiana:
