Cutting Out Aspartame, But No, It Doesn't Cause Cancer
February 2nd 2007 16:29
I was looking up low carb stuff on the Internet last night and I came across a site for an Atkins diet center. It was listing various tips to lose weight. I was surprised that one of them was to cut out aspartame. Apparently, if you are at a plateau, cutting out aspartame usually works.
I was getting a little antsy at the thought of having to stop drinking my Diet Pepsi. However, they said that sucralose (Splenda) doesn't seem to have the same effect. As far as drinks that are Splenda-sweetened go, of course there is Diet Rite, and also Pepsi One and 7 UP. I've had Pepsi One before, actually first had it when I was in high school and it came in a silver can. I could not get enough of it, but I'm pretty sure the switch to sweeten it with Splenda is a new thing. Still, it's pretty good as long as it's cold. I will buy some at the store, probably tonight.
Don't think because I am cutting out aspartame that it causes cancer. I seriously have never had anything bad happen to me from drinking it. In fact, it's been shown in studies that you can drink up to 16 aspartame-sweetened drinks a day safely. What happened in the study with the mice is they gave them an overload of aspartame - many times their body weight every day. Consuming anything in such high amounts is probably toxic. Many vitamins that we take would be toxic if we took too many.
I'm considering stevia to sweeten coffee and green tea. I haven't tried it since about 2000, so maybe they've found some way to improve on it. Its taste is kind of bitter, but I found some liquid stevia on Amazon in such flavors as Vanilla Creme and Toffee.
If you've cut out aspartame or even all sweeteners, post and let me know what your results were.
