Drinking While Dieting, Part II
February 21st 2007 22:17
I've been posting and reading posts on Peer Trainer, and someone had a thread on giving up alcohol to lose weight. I still had been having a few drinks on the weekends, but every morning after those 1-2 nights a week, I usually gain weight or don't lose. Now I am thinking to really speed things along, I should quit drinking altogether for now.
If you're on a diet and haven't given up alcohol, you may be having trouble losing. This is because alcohol is a toxin that your liver has to rid from your body. While it's doing that it can't burn fat - especially abdominal fat for some reason. I've found that even one night a week really hurts my efforts.
It may not be easy to stop if all your friends drink. I've heard of drinking Red Bull (sugar free or regular) instead of having a drink, if you're at a bar. It will provide a caffeine buzz and you might find that it's more fun than drinking club soda all night. However...club soda is free, as is diet coke, etc.
Sometimes your friends might seem offended if you're not drinking - like you're saying something about their drinking being too much. Try to explain that it's just while you're losing weight. Or maybe just have one drink, although 'just one drink' at a bar or club could easily end up being more.
Matt and I just found a great bar downtown from our apartment, with the best pizza. We went there for Mardi Gras, and I actually didn't drink anything (I'm one of those freaks who loooooves club soda). It seemed to be just fine, although I should probably not frequent bars in the future...this might be a good idea for someone who's trying to give it up, too.
What do you guys think about this? If you're dieting, have you continued to drink? Or have you stopped?
