While Dieting, Make Sure You Eat Enough!
April 25th 2007 22:56
I recently was reading a Fitness magazine and came across some weight loss tips. Various things like drinking water, getting enough sleep, exercising, etc all seemed like no-brainers to me. However, one of their "tips" was that if you aren''t losing weight like you'd like to, always, always lower your calories.
What many dieters don't know is that keeping calories too low can be a cause of stalls. Your body will begin to adapt to a mode of starvation and lowering your calories can make it worse. Typically, calories should be no lower than 1200 - and that's the absolute minimum.
I recently bumped my calories to 2000 a day. Granted, it is easier to do this with low carb, but it broke a plateau I was having with my weight loss. I had been eating less than 1200 calories and was wondering why I wasn't losing - despite what I know to be true about weight loss!
I have recently had trouble getting my calories in, due to being busy and not having much of an appetite. Still, I try to eat even when I am not hungry at times to keep my weight loss going.
This is absolutely key for the metabolism during weight loss. It may be counterintuitive, but to speed things along, you really need to keep fueling your body. So that's why that tip in Fitness really rubbed me the wrong way!
Now that I've said that, it is possible to eat too many calories to lose weight. Very possible. So you may have to experiment with different levels of calorie intake. Always give your body time to adjust before changing things up.
Have any of you ever had a time where you couldn't lose, and upping your calories seemed to help? Let me know in the comments!

No, I haven't had this experience, what is happening for me is that I am losing weight but every 10 days or so, sometimes less, I suddenly get very hungry and would almost eat everything in sight. I do eat more then, but it takes quite a bit to satisfy the hunger, then I go back to my reduced intake again.
Exercise really is a very big factor and I'm doing that reasonably well, all things being considered.

I agree - exercise is a huge factor.
What you're talking about is a trick that's been used by quite a few people to keep their bodies from adapting to low calorie. I've done this myself and if it works for you, that's great!
