Product Review - Coca Cola's Calorie-Burning Enviga
February 14th 2007 20:35
I've been reading a lot about this new green-tea flavored soda from Coca-Cola and Nestle - there's been some online hype about it, and I read on the Center for Science in the Public Interest site that they're being sued for false claims about the drink's ability to burn calories (also on Diet-Blog). Apparently the calories are burned through the component in green tea, EGCG, and caffiene. Anyway, I jump at the chance to try any new soda (I'm back on some aspartame now.
The Taste
The first thing I noticed about this drink (other than its pretty packaging) is that the sweet taste was very intense. They actually used more than one sweetener in here (which I'll talk more about in the breakdown), and the taste is extremely sweet. I got the regular green tea flavor, which was nice and not too potent...flavorful enough that I didn't hate drinking it.
At first I thought there was an aftertaste but then I reallized it was the Carmex on my lips (I get chapped lips in dry weather). However, I had trouble finishing it due to the sweetness...I gave the rest of it to Matt, who said it was "okay."
The Breakdown
One can of Enviga (12 oz) has five calories - I'm not sure where those come from, perhaps from the sweeteners. It also has aspartame and acesulfame potassium (ace-K, another sweetener). It also has 100 mg of caffeine.
Putting two sweeteners was really unnecessary. It was a bit of an overkill for me. As far as the caffeine goes - Whoa! Is this part of the calorie burning effect? That's equivalent to three cups of coffee - so I'm glad I didn't finish it or I would have been up all night!
To have to drink 3 of these to (possibly) burn 60-100 calories is just too much. You can burn 100 calories on the elliptical for 10 minutes.
