The Concept of Exercise
March 30th 2007 21:08
I recently saw an article on one of my news links talking about Americans "sounding off" on how much they hate exercise. I've personally been on both sides of the issue. When it comes to cardio, I'm right there with them. No human being should have to suffer through walking endlessly on a treadmill or elliptical. It's boring and you go nowhere. However, when it comes to weights, I enjoy strenghtening my body. I plan to get a home gym this year and I'm excited about it.
I've heard people make the argument that our bodies are made to do exercise - and enjoy it (adrenaline, etc). I think the problem comes in with what is thought as exercise. Nowadays, people have so many conveniences - cars, remote controls, microwaves, etc - that "exericse" has to be something created and done in a designated place - i.e., the gym. When in fact, our bodies are made to do the incidental exercise that USED to happen as we went to hunt for our food, or work on a farm all day.
Nowadays, can you really blame people for not wanting to have some pre-arranged time where they get all sweaty in a gym full of strangers? It's the way we've evolved that leaves us little choice.
It's up to us to make exercise something that we can tolerate and even enjoy. Unless we have a particularly active jobs, our routines aren't going to get the work done for us. As for what to do to get your heart pumping - that's up to you.
