Fatty Foods Cause Cancer?
March 28th 2007 16:24
Yesterday I read about a study that showed that women who ate large amounts of fats a day, particularly from processed junk food and meats, had a significantly increased risk of breast cancer. My diet is about 70 percent fat, so this concerned me. I did a little research and it apparently doesn't matter which kiind of fat you eat, strangely enough - as in mono- or polyunsaturated. Wait a minute, that doesn't make sense!
What I want to know is whether the risk would still increase in the absence of carbs. I think some Atkins supporters have claimed that it's actually a high-carb, high-fat diet that causes the risk for breast cancer to increase.
I used to meet with a group of women, one of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer (at the age of 45). She had a great attitude about it, but the radation treatments were clearly wearing on her. She ended up having a lumpectomy (as opposed to a masectomy which would remove the entire breast). I remember praying that that would never, ever happen to me!
Until researchers sort out the carb and fat ratios that play a role, I will continue to eat low-carb. I'd like to see more research done on the effect of fat on the body when combined with simple carbs (which we already know is a terrible combination).
If you are eating lots of processed foods, you may want to cut down - particularly if they are high-fat. "Clean" eating is always best.
