The Fruit Of Life
May 26th 2008 01:12
If you read my entry about Eating Like A Mediterranean I gave points about the long life diet. Now perhaps I have uncovered the secret fruit to a long and healthy life. I'm going out on a limb and this is just a theory of mine. I believe that the least common denominator to the Mediterranean diet is the fig!
I know that the fig is so common to the region that in some areas it grows wild. Although times change, at one time the fig was considered a community fruit and one could go and eat the fruit even if it was on someone's land. It is common during the summer, but the trees give an abundance that it is common to sun dry them to eat year round.
Figs are a basic miracle fruit. They are loaded with nutrients and naturally sweet. bid\=24" target="_blank">The benefits of the fig can be found everywhere. The last site also warns of certain safety issues about figs for certain individuals.
I have seen the small California figs and the apple-sized figs in Italy. The fresh ones in Italy were reccomended to peal the skin like a banana and discard it. I believe these were the Brown Turkey variety.
I once dubbed the fig a fiber bomb! I reccomend that you eat about three figs a day and watch its effect. I actually believe this is the fruit that fills you up and keeps you regular. The dried ones are just as beneficial as the fresh. This fruit is definitely overlooked by the health community in my opinion.
