Tips For Eating Healthy When Eating Out
February 11th 2007 22:46
I go out to eat a lot - about 2-3 times a week, mostly on the weekends. It's really easy to break your calorie budget if you're eating at a restaurant - they pile on the trans fat, creamy sauces, cheese, etc. Not to mention the plates of bread or chips they always bring before the meal. This is what I do -
-Ask the waiter what kind of oils they cook in. If they say they use vegetable oil, it's probably trans fat - partially hydrogenated veg. oil is the main form of trans fat.
-Skip the bread. Ask the waiter not to bring it and just focus on the people at your table and what you're drinking. The problem is that most people DO want the bread. In that case just get it and take one piece and let everyone else have the rest. I usually eat a piece without butter or just pick at mine until the food comes.
-Ask for salad dressing, and other sauces, on the side. Seriously, when I ask for dressing on the side, they give me this giant thing of it that I would have never used. Plus, that way your salad stays fresh. Other sauces on pasta etc, like cream sauce, you can also ask for on the side. Don't worry about it if it's tomato sauce or olive oil.
-If you want dessert, just order one for the table, and a few spoons, so you can have a couple spoonfuls of it without pigging out (you can't because there will be other people there!) Individual desserts for everyone can really add up - lots are over 1000 calories each.
-If you're eating low carb, you can order fajitas and just eat the meat, rice and vegetables without the tortillas - or a hamburger or turkey burger without the bun.
Hope these help!
