HFCS-The BIG Lie!

January 4th 2007 00:06
Since blogs sometimes span the globe, I understand when someone elsewhere asks, "What the hell is this guy talking about???" Somethings are found in my little corner of the world and may not exist elsewhere. I may speak from a certain state in the US and someone in Europe won't get it any more than normal Americans can understand British humor! Shockingly, even in the States, the States vary from each other!

In the US our food labels that are supposed to help the consumer shop more wisely and healthy are more confusing and health draining than the product! They have become easier to read as now you only require a lawyer and a dietician to interpret it! Seriously, whatever your label says about Carbohydrates, Fiber is better than Sugars. There is an exception, if sugars are natural, such as fruit. This is another entry!

High Fructose Corn Syrup has been finding it's way in the American food chain since the 70's. It started in the notorious soft drinks that are blamed for obesity. Saccharine had become notorious for causing cancer in hamsters, although no human has yet been diagnosed. So HFCS had a whole door open to it.

Men's Health magazine reported on the ills of HFCS, accusing it of causing brittle bones among other things. Others are still accusing HFCS of being linked to obesity. Men's Health may have gone overboard when it published it's 125 Best Foods for men. Imagine many of the foods containing HFCS...granola bars being notorious for it!

Good or bad, decide for yourself. I have tried to avoid it, but find it popping up in too many foods. Some might get through, but moderation is the key. The following links, give both sides of the HFCS issue. The pros usually come from the industry that may rival the oil industry!

The Corn Refiners wouldn't lie about their products...Would They?

I fully believe that sugar is better than HFCS.
