Hypertension Drugs and Alzheimer's
January 16th 2010 11:16
A new study suggests that drugs used to treat high blood pressure, may lower the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The study says that the class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers is associated with a decrease and progression of dementia.
Although this is yet a great discovery in the fight of Alzheimer's disease, it isn't the first time hypertension medication is associated with lowering dementia.
Here I thought it wasn't a good thing taking HBP medications for years, and hypertension isn't a good thing, but I am no longer complaining!
Keep in mind that hypertension may be a cause of dementia because of the decreased blood flow to the brain. If you don't have high blood pressure, your blood flow is normal and that would be a good preventative for dementia. So don't run to your doctor to find a way to get the medication if you don't need it!
