Living Off The Land

Somebody stop me but I have been a big believer of living off the land for decades. My father once said that each season bears its fruits and man can live off the land because of it. We lived in an agricultural area at the time and only consumed fruits and vegetables in their season. This was along the Mediterranean and I believe this is why Mediterraneans are healthy and live long lives.
I know I've written about this somewhere in this blog. I believe that fruits and vegetables that grow in your area serve a purpose to you moreso than food that is from far-away. In other words, northerners don't need tropical or citrus fruits that doesn't grow where they live. You get the main concept.
Now I read about people that have applied the same concept and eating only what grows around them. Living off the land may have started since old times and is an ancient philosophy in some places of Europe. I tend to think in the 'what if?' What if we only knew our own corner in the world, how would we survive? If you couldn't get it where you live, you couldn't get it.
In case you think this is a vegetarian concept, animals are fair game. Fish, birds, mammals, etc., if you can hunt it, it's prey. A person in the story buys a half cow from a local rancher. There is a difference between buying local and living off the local land. Of course this entire concept of living off the land may not be feasible especially when it comes to convenience. There is more work involved. Buying locally, I believe, may be convenient and healthy in the long run.
Something else that a 'locavore' would benefit from is knowing what edible plants grow wild in your area.
Like I said, I belive your 'fruits' from your land are what you need to survive and have a healthy life. FRUITS involve ALL edible food(fruits, vegetables, meats, grains, etc.).
