Low Carb Diets

March 2nd 2007 17:41
Hi guys. Today I'd like to post about low carb diets. You may have read the Livin' La Vida Low Carb blog written by Jimmy Moore - which is an excellent blog on living a low carb lifestyle. Jimmy lost a huge amount of weight - I believe around 140 lbs - and has been eating a low carb diet for three years and kept the weight off.
I have about 20 lbs that I would ideally like to lose for my wedding. My first dress fitting is in June so that gives me about three months - a rate of around 2 lbs/ week. I became interested in low carb diets after hearing them get a bad rap and then reading in the media that they are as good for your heart as low-fat diets ( a study I read earlier this year). I have a nutritionist and she has always recommended a low-fat diet with plenty of carbs - but I find that those increase my cravings and make me want even more, while also leaving me hungry.

I don't really know how to go about such a thing, but I emailed Jimmy Moore himself and he sent me a great meal plan. I now have something to go on and will have to shop soon.
I recently tried Shirataki tofu noodles - these only have about 1g net carbs and can be found at health food stores or ordered online. If you haven't tried these, please do! I mixed them with a little bit of pesto and olive oil and I thought they tasted great! I bought them soaked in water, and the smell is a little off-putting (it says to parboil them to avoid this) but I just drained them and heated them up.
Jimmy is also against aspartame because he says it slows weight loss. I have been off aspartame completely for a couple weeks now and I only drink diet drinks sweetened with Splenda (Diet Rite and Diet Coke with Splenda are two of my favorites and I also like Pepsi One). Of course I am not seeing any weight loss yet, and the withdrawals were tough, but I think in the end I'll be glad I did it.

I used to eat more low-carb during the day - and eat carb-heavy cereals and sandwiches in the evening. Recently I've been trying to have a few carbs at breakfast and keep them low the rest of the day.
Have you tried a low carb diet? Post and let me know!

Clair, I have lost 140 lbs following a low carb lifestyle and have kept it off for over a year and a half, Jimmy by the way has lost 180lbs. A book I found most helpful was Living the Low Carb Life by Jonny Bowden. Can be purchased new or used on amazon.com. The best advice I can give is to keep a food journal. Yes I know writing every thing down is a pain but it does work. It not only keeps you accountable it provides a reference for weeks when you don't lose. You can go back and review your week and see if you changed anything that might have stalled you or slowed you down. I also advise doing research on different low carb plans out there then find one that fits , read it and follow it. Jonnys book gives a review of the most popular plans available. Exercise is essential. Even if it is only walking. Strength training is also adviseable. Building muscle increases metabolism. I reccomend Curves. Good Luck and if I think of anything else that might help I'll let you know.

Tess,
Congrats on your weight loss! Thanks for the tips - I will check that book out. I've also heard keeping a food journal is good...I keep one online at Sparkpeople but haven't updated it recently. Good idea!

Claire,
Congrats on starting your new Low Carb Journey! I began eating this way awhile back for weight loss but have discovered that this way of eating has helped me feel so much better. I have some other medical problems and as long as I am sticking to my eating plan I am not only losing weight but having much more sucess with the other problems.

You made a very good choice in contacing Jimmy Moore he is a wonderful resource for everything to do with this way of life.

If there is anything I can do to help you please let me know.

Ladyred.

Claire--
I weighed nearly 400 lbs a few yrs ago and opted for the gastric bypass surgery---my health was in dire straits prior to surgery---I have since lost over 240 lbs and never felt better in my life. Great huh...
Want to know what eating plan you are encouraged to eat after surgery??? Yup--you guessed it---low carb--all the studies done on those of us who have gone the surgery route---when we add carbs back into our diet--we gain weight. Even though we have a stomach the size of an egg.
So yes I'm a firm believer in this way of life---and it is a way of life---you just don't do it for awhile--then go back to eating all the things that made you chunky, chubby, obese, fat or whatever terminology you want to use---in the first place.
So I didn't have my insides reworked just to have the same health problems as before--so I stick faithfully with my low carb lifestyle.

You said you were going to eat carbs at breakfast and then eat less of them later in the day. Carbs seem to have a greater effect in the morning for a lot of people. Eating carbs at breakfast can double (or more) my appetite for the rest of the day. I try to get at least 20g of protein and plenty of fat for breakfast and am hardly ever hungry before lunch time. If I eat cereal instead I'm starving again within a couple of hours.
