"Fitness" Magazine - Is Life Really This Sad?
May 5th 2007 13:22
Any thoughts of South Beach were quickly put to rest after reading this month's issue of "Fitness" (for women). It's clear that a low-fat lifestyle is at least as sad as it sounds. The magazine is full of kicky "You Can Do It!" articles about how to lift 3 pound weights to "tone without bulk" and how strawberries make a great dessert. The ads are for things like pretzels, mini bagels, and low-fat cheese with women dutifully, but cheerfully, eating their "yummy" food. Or my personal favorite = an ad for Weight Watchers sugar-free sherbet bars with the slogan "Sensible Tastiness"! You know something is trying hard to be "tasty" with a tagline like that!
I like the fitness models they use, but I can guarantee you they didn't get their muscular physique by lifting 3- or 5-pound weights. At least it's a step up from their previous models, who I thought looked undernourished - more like fashion models than fitness models.
In short, I had almost resigned myself to a low-fat lifestyle (for quicker weight loss) until reading this magazine. I realized I would never be able to live this way long-term - and your way of eating should be something you enjoy. I'm not knocking low-fat for others - if it works for you, that's great. It certainly did work for the Biggest Losers of previous seasons - and countless others.
The bottom line is that you have to find something that works for you for the rest of your life. You can't expect to follow a diet plan until you lose weight, then go back to your old way of eating. This is the mistake that 95 percent of dieters make, which ensures that they won't keep the weight off.
So what works the best for you? Please let me know in the comments
