McDonald's Finally Picks Trans-fat Replacement
January 30th 2007 21:04
McDonald's has recently been taking heat for trailing its competitors in reducing its amounts of trans fat. By now we've been well versed in the possible dangers – like heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity. And McDonald's fries are laden with them - the most recent count is a whopping 8 grams for a serving of large fries.
For health-conscious fast-food goers who appreciate the convenience, things may be looking up. The McDonald's Corp has finally chosen a trans-fat-free oil – a healthier blend of corn oil, soy and canola oil. The new choice comes in light of the trans fat ban in restaurants in New York City – the deadline to comply starts in July.
McDonald's has tested this oil blend extensively, and plans to phase it in slowly. Although voicing concern about the taste change in their fries – trans fat produces a satisfying “mouth feel”- they are being applauded for their decision to make America a healthier place.
