High-Protein Diet Causes More Weight/Fat Loss
January 24th 2007 14:14
I was just reading about a study in which they measured fat and weight loss in people consuming a high-protein diet (1/4 calories) and a medium protein diet. Apparently there was an additional 5.5. pounds lost in the high-protein diet group. However what I found most interesting is that those who lost more also doubled their abdominal fat loss. This is good, because excess fat around the midsection is the most dangerous. It increases your risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. While I'm not sure exactly how high amounts of protein caused this to happen, I have since tried to up the protein in my own diet.
My morning whey protein shake has 46 grams of protein. During the rest of the day I try to eat high-protein food items like eggs and nuts. I am losing fat according to my caliper and jeans-fitting measures, but this is probably due to my weight training. I will have to see about the protein because, with my wedding coming up in September, I could certainly stand to look my best!
If you are eating a 2000-calorie diet, then about 500 calories should come from protein (to replicate what's done in the study). If your own diet contains more or fewer calories, just multiply the number by .25 to see how much protein you should be eating.
Stay tuned, more coming tomorrow as always.
