Shocking! What's In Those Restaurant Meals You've Been Eating?
February 28th 2007 18:16
Matt and I have recently been experimenting with going out to dinner less - we typically go on Friday, Saturday, and with his parents on Sunday. Last week we skipped the Saturday meal and bought some food at a health-food store.
You probably already know that restaurant meals aren't the greatest for you in terms of sodium, saturated and trans fat and refined carbs. However, what I read in the latest edition of my Nutrition Action newsletter really horrified me.
Here's some popular entrees/appetizers that you might get at various restaurants - and the amount of damage you're looking at.
Ruby Tuesday - Colossal Burger
This gigantic burger comes with two patties, three buns, and two kinds of cheese. Without the sauce OR fries, the total for this burger is - 1940 calories, and 141 grams of fat! (The company refused to provide sodium or say which kind of fat, but I'm guessing it's mostly saturated). Yikes!
Uno Chicago Grill - Pizza Skins
These are basically one deep dish pizza with mashed potatoes, cheddar, bacon and sour cream. I've been to Uno - fortunately have never ordered this. It contains 2050 calories, 48 grams saturated fat, and 3140 mg sodium. And that's just an appetizer!
On The Border - Ranchiladas
This sounds like a typical dinner Matt might have at some of our local Mexican restaurants - I usually order a taco salad, which isn't great either. It's an 8-ounce steak topped with ranchero sauce and cheese, and paired with two cheese enchiladas, chili con carne, rice and beans. 1870 calories, 46 grams of saturated fat, and 3810 grams of sodium.
I won't even get into the desserts which were equally heinous...Matt has high blood pressure and I think we really need to be eating out a lot less often...these restaurants meals can't be good for his (and my) health!
So next time you're eating out, choose wisely....or better yet stay home and cook yourself something healthy!

I made the mistake the other night of watching a t.v. show that featured things in restaraunt kitchens we'd never want to see - the standard, of course, was food being dropped on the floor and then served. But it got so much worse than that! I couldn't believe what goes on when makeshift cooks think no one's looking! It'll make ya think twice before sending something back to the kitchen, that's for sure.
It wasn't limited to just restaraunt kitchens, though. There was a special little bit about pizza delivery, too. One guy actually opened the pizza box, licked every single pepperoni, closed the box, and then rang the bell to deliver the meal. ::
