Tricks For Staying Motivated
February 20th 2007 20:58
I probably mentioned that I am getting married this September. I went dress shopping multiple times - each was painful because wedding dresses are sized differently - you have to buy at least two sizes bigger than what you wear (so I was told). I'm a 6 in pants, so we tried a 10...too loose in the bottom, too tight in the top. When I finally ordered it it had to be a size 12 - due to my weirdly shaped body.
It was very depressing, and no one wants to hear that they're top-heavy (mostly in my rib cage and shoulders but still). So, after ordering my (gorgeous) dress, I made sure that it could be altered if I lost weight. It can be, up to three sizes.
The dress will be coming in June, so I've got a few months till I need to look fabulous. I'm wondering how I'll stay motivated - right now envisioning myself in a much smaller dress seems to do the trick. I've read that a good way to get motivated is to pick an outfit that you want to wear at your goal weight, and keep it somewhere where you can see it.
Something that has helped me is to look in the mirror a lot instead of avoiding it. If I avoid it, I kind of forget how bad I look - but it's hard to if it's staring me right in the face.
I also bought one of those fancy Tanita scales after reading good reviews on Amazon - people who are interested in fitness and health seemed to enjoy them and benefit from all the extra readings (it tells you things like visceral fat, muscle mass and metabolic age). I'm not sure how it does this - but it could be helpful to see trends over time. I'm interested in my visceral fat also, since that's the most dangerous kind.
If anyone has any tips on staying motivated, please post

Lent starts tomorrow, so I'll be fasting off and on for the next several weeks. That usually takes off a few pounds. If not, then I'll need to get started on a diet in order to be ready for summer.

I got started this week - I'm not going to fast for Lent, but I've been cutting back calories and going out when Matt takes my dog for her walks. We've also been climbing the stairs up to our 10th floor loft (although it's been a little difficult to get Matt to go along).
