WHOLE Is The Answer

Sometimes trying to figure out the nutrition labels on foods takes a rocket scientist. This is compounded by the fact that sometimes the food is sold as healthy when in actuality, it isn't. Nutrition labels will be another topic. In this post, I will try to explain what is the difference between Whole and Refined grains and how to be sure you're getting the healthier of the two.
In today's health oriented society, we often hear about eating grains for health. Whole grains consist of bran, germ, and starch. When grains are refined the bran and germ are removed leaving the starch. Basically you are removing the good parts and leaving the not-so-good part. For years I bought wheat bread because I thought it was good for you. When the grain breads came out I thought they were even better. I went from nine to ten to twelve grain breads. How wrong I was!
After reading this article in Remedy magazine, I realized just how wrong I was and how I wasted money on a pseudo-health food. The secret to the grains lies in reading the ingredients on the food label. In breads and pastas the first word in the ingredients is WHOLE. Other examples are shown in this short, sweet, and to the point article.
I was shocked when it came to cereals, because the ones I thought the healthiest, Corn Flakes and others, were refined rather than whole. The article was a bit more detailed in the magazine, but the info is more than adequate!
